Origin
The answer to the question is two-folded. First of all Halloween derives from the New Year celebration of the Celts. They called that night Samhain, Winter´s Eve. The Celts thought that the spirits of people who had died the past year would search for new bodies this particular night, the 31st of October. In order not to be possessed, people would make their own homes as uncomfortable as possible, by turning off the heat. At night, the Celts went on a parade, dressed in weird clothes. The aim was to frighten the souls of the dead.
All Saints Day
The day after Halloween, the 1st of November is the All Saints Day, an important holiday in the Christian church. It is also called All Hallows, a definition turned into Halloween. The church has never been in favor of the Celtic tradition of Halloween, and has tried to stop the celebrations by claming the the parades and the costumes to be evil. But that has not been that successful. Today Halloween is a secular holiday.
Today
The Celtic traditions has persisted the catholic criticism. The habit of Halloween got to America in the 1840:s by Irish immigrants. The tradition has since then grown into an international habit, and Halloween is today celebrated in all of the western countries. The costumes and the parading on the streets are still two of the main things about Halloween. The trick-or-treating is also a tradition that has become a part of the modern form of Halloween. That tradition comes from the Celtic habit of walking door-to-door in order to collect money and food for the parade.
Even the Jack-o-lantern has traditions from the Irish Folklore. A drunkard called Jack got very drunk one night and he almost lost his life. The Devil came along to claim his soul but Jack fooled the Devil himself. Jack tried to change his life for the better after that, but soon became a drunkard again. That made the Devil find him once more. Once again Jack fooled him. Unfortunately Jack died soon after and neither the good God or the Devil would let him rest. The Devil just gave him a coal to light up the darkness in Neverland. That coal, Jack put in a turnip.

ResponderEliminarWHAT KIND OF WRITING IS HALLOWEEN?
A SHORT STORY, A FOLK TALE, A FABLE, A CLASSICAL STORY, OR OTHER... AND WHY?
Halloween belong to "FOLKTALE/ FOLK TALE", due to his characteristics; the first one these are traditional stories which belonging to one particular culture, in this case from the Celts; in order to explain to someone or the population the social customs as the reason of why people dressed in weird clothes, religious beliefs, historical events and eve natural phenomena, e.i. their origins of their traditions, the second characteristic is that they are passes down though generations mainly in a oral way, like legends.
ResponderEliminarA part from that specifically this writing explain us the origin of other things like why in Halloween night children go out and go door to door in order to ask for some candies , money or something like that. To know all of this through Folktale is going to help us to understant in a better way our origins but I think that the most important it is going to helps us to value our cultural wealth.
From my ponit of view, the Halloween celebration is consider like a folktale because this text is a fictitious story which shows the tradition that is told from generation to generation. Everytime that people celebrates this day, they make new versions of it adding information to mantain the interest on the listeners. A big difference between short story and folktales is that folktales are myth or ledgen and short stories can be based on facts or fiction acts. It is known also, that a folktale can have any length.
ResponderEliminarSpecially for Halloween, this folktales are used to increase a social tradition and to foment the culture in countries, and not also liske a Halloween celebration, we can find folktales to remind All Saints Day.
In point of view Halloween is a folk tale, because many people know it, although someone doesn’t practice it. Also it represents a tradition and it has been conformed for many unreal characters that come alive and act based on a paper that characterizes the time and represents a purpose, but it can be a legend, because there are real situations that marked the start that tradition, but through of the times it has been changing and to a form more attractive and fun, and focus in the interesting of the children in order to keep it and continue to encourage.
ResponderEliminarIn order to provide a proper answer to this question it is imperative, from my perspective, to reflect on two main aspects. Firstly, Halloween would not be considered as kind writing, provided that it is not handed down orally; but as a text. Secondly, Since this celebration form part of a culture, the English folklore, it is an oral text which is included in traditional narrative; thereby it includes elements which illustrate traditions in terms of artifacts, describable and transmissible entity, culture and behavior as areas of study related to folklore (George and Owens: 1995).
ResponderEliminarAs a final point, Halloween, as other popular beliefs, is an oral ‘tale’ passed down through generations; consequently it might be a folktale; nevertheless, Halloween does not shared all folktale characteristics (http://www.harlan.k12.ia.us/mrsc/folktale_characteristics.htm; http://www.thaifolk.com/doc/literate/Tales/type_e.htm)

ResponderEliminarI hope Miss. Diaz would be so kind to elucidate this in class. Actually I have not got a clue about the category where Halloween is included, I previously though it was just a custom, a folklore item which has allowed the creation of several tales and legends. What I am certain about is that Halloween, as a tradition, may arouse the creation of short stories, folk tales or fables; I mean, different texts may be written about Halloween considering it as a theme...
ResponderEliminarI deeply believe we would better make this clearer! Please!
In my own opinion “Halloween” is a traditional celebration in some cultures and it might have survived through generations due to the beliefs of specific societies because some others are not agreeing with that sort of traditions. Although it can be consider like a colorful celebration full of folklore. Halloween stories could be an example of folktales because of the characteristics of the plot and the characters. This stories are rich in legends and myths along the time. What make attractive this text are the traditions and beliefs about the life beyond the time.

I consider that halloween not is exactly a kind of writing.
ResponderEliminarAs we know Halloween is an annual celebration in the USA and the UK.
Firtly the Halloween celebration I think it isn´t a kind of text, but it has some elements of folktale. It has good and bad characters and involves the common people and/or animals, so it isn´t totaly a folklate.
Second the Halloween is consider for somebody like a traditional celebrate in some culture and ledge because it survived through generations but I am not sure because a ledge is based a real facts and it is told from generation to generation.
As a final point, I think that Halloween is a traditional celebrate it involves beliefs. It survives in each cultures and they make new versions.

Halloween (or Hallowe'en) is an annual holiday observed on October 31, primarily in Ireland, Scotland, Canada and the United States. It has roots in the Celtic festival of Samhain and the Christian holiday All Saints' Day, but is today largely a secular celebration.
ResponderEliminarCommon Halloween activities include trick-or-treating, wearing costumes and attending
costume parties, carving jack-o'-lanterns, ghost tours, bonfires, apple bobbing, visiting haunted attractions, committing pranks, telling ghost stories or other frightening tales, and watching horror films.
Origin of name
The word Halloween is first attested in the 16th century and represents a Scottish variant of the fuller All-Hallows-Even ("evening"), that is, the night before All Hallows Day.[10] Although the phrase All Hallows is found in Old English (ealra hālgena mæssedæg, mass-day of all saints), All-Hallows-Even is itself not attested until 1556.
Halloween is legend because the people celebrate it every year, and the children wear costumes in order to conserve their tradition. I think that it was born in United Stated, and it expand at all the world, but every country has its own ideology, furthermore in Mexico we have similar tradition but we adopt this tradition and it is that we more practice. I like so much that date, because the people remember at the persons that today they are not here with us and they put the food and the drinks that dead liked, in order to the dead take the whichever they want.
ResponderEliminarFrom my ponit of view, the Halloween celebration is consider like a folktale because this text is a fictitious story which shows the tradition that is told from generation to generation. In fact this celebration is of foering countries and many countries had taken decision to make a kind of party for celebrate this story. In this party people have to wear costumer of characters that they are not real all this characters are in own mind. Why is a folktales? Well, becaues Halloween is a celebration that had been make for Celts and all this have a meaning for them for example they need to wear coustomer for represent differents characters like ghosts, witches, sombies, vampires and other so all this have in the maind.
ResponderEliminarwell, i consider halloween is a folk tale because is some fantastic (irreal)also exist a lot of legends about halloween, one legend tell us that previously had priests called druids as they were in charge of directing the celebration, the town ordered that bonfires were lit in every home, while they raised huge pyres in the hills. Legend has it that the Druids roamed the villages every house demanding a virgin or a child for sacrifice at the stake as a sacrifice in order to appease the spirits. The victims bit the heads off and their bodies burned in the fires of the hills. Each family could choose whether delivered to the victim would be slaughtered if the Druids did a turnip left on the doorstep that would protect it from evil spirits. If, however, the family refused to hand over to someone, then the Druids marked the door of the house, which meant that evil spirits could enter and do what they wanted there.
ResponderEliminarHi all
ResponderEliminarFirst of all I can´t classify Hallowen as a Kind of writting because it is a huge celebration and tradition in some countries but if the questions is How the text written above could be classified I could say that is a folk tale because involves some caracteristics that folktales have such as traditional narrative, usually anonymous, handed down orally - eg, fables, fairy tales, legends, etc. further more is a holiday that's celebrated annually on the night of October 31. It is originated in Ireland, and is celebrated in some countries including Ireland itself, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Sweden among others. Also in a variety of ways and activities including trick-or-treating, ghost tours, bonfires, costume parties, "haunted house" tours, carving pumpking because each genarations is changuig so the believes and ways to celebrate this day is changing too.
